Kevon Looney Admits Doing Something Rare in Emotional Goodbye to Stephen Curry & Draymond Green
Kevon Looney isnât just leaving a team; he is closing a chapter of his life that shaped him on and off the court. After a decade with the Golden State Warriors, the beloved big man penned a heartfelt farewell in The Playersâ Tribune that hit fans right in the feels.
âThose guys, theyâve been my big brothers for the past 10 years â showing me the ropes, guiding me, helping me to grow up. I relied on those two so much throughout my time as a Warrior. And especially when I first came into the league, I needed that guidance, that wisdom, the friendship. Iâm not a big crier, but calling to tell them Iâm heading somewhere else was pretty emotional for me, just to be real with you. It was like, I donât know ⦠I felt those conversations in my heart. I hope they know how grateful I am. How thankful.â
Looney here was referring to his conversation with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. The athlete points out that they were his first calls after he decided to sign a two-year, $16 million deal with the New Orleans Pelicans. Drafted 30th overall in 2015, Looney battled injuries early on but grew into the Warriorsâ ironman, playing 599 gamesâ¦290 straight! And winning three titles. He became the guy who did the dirty work, the screens, the switches, the rebounds. And the glue.
At just 29, Looney hoped to retire in the Bay. But as he said, âThe NBA changes a lot, month by month.â The Warriors now move forward without one of their cultural cornerstones. Looney summed it up best in a simple tweet, â10 years in the Bay changed my life. Thank you, Dub Nation.â Forever a Warrior. Always âLoon”.
